Restaurants We've Tried

It has been really hard to find a good list of restaurants in Hai Phong so we are putting together a list of the places we have been to.

Haiphong Brewery - 16 D Lach Tray
I am not a beer drinker, at least not before we came to Haiphong and I realized that good wine is very scarce - and not often available when we go out to eat.  Now I usually drink beer with dinner, even beer with ice.  We went to Haiphong Brewery to try the beer, and the food.  The brewery is a happening place with many tables full of beer drinkers, even for dinner which I believe is not their busiest meal.  My got the sweet and sour squid, fried mustard greens and beef with noodles, and two large beers. The food was very good. I had read a couple of reviews that weren't very keen on the food so we were happily surprised.  Our meal came to 195,000 VND.  One of the reviewers complained that the place was dirty - for Vietnamese standards it was fine.

Social - So 1 Lo 8A Le Hong Phong
We were lucky to come here opening night. We had been watching for several weeks for this restaurant to open, just down the block from where we live. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner - dinner is Tapas, many different Vietnamese dishes.  They have a large selection of drinks, beer in the bottle/can and on tap as well as wine by the glass.  On our servers recommendation we had the Cucumber Tonic for John, cosmo for me, french fries, Social Crispy Rice, Social Special Salad and Seafood Noodle Stir Fry.  All were delicious.  Our first time to try crisply rice which they served with their Social Special Sauce,

ZoZo's off of Le Hong Phong across from Catbi Plaza
We had walked by ZoZo'z many times but hadn’t stopped in at yet.  This was an outdoor restaurant on the street.  It was bigger than most of the street restaurants and always had a crowd. The wait staff spoke very little English and we had a good time trying to figure out what they were saying and the other way around as they tried to understand us.  We ended up with our first Vietnamese grill, or các món nướng.  We have seen this many times and it always smelled so good when walking around town. They brought the grill right to the table, along with marinated beef, sliced vegies, pickled vegies, sliced (the long way) cucumbers, another meet wrapped around vegies and tied as well as my favorite, morning glory, and of course we had beer over ice.  They patiently taught us how to grill our meats and vegies and which sauces to dip it in.  This was our best dinner in Hai Phong so far.  This meal was 255,000 VND or $12 US.

Com Vietnam - 4 A P Hoang Van ThuHaiphongVietnam
We were asked to pick from the display case (no menu – thank heavens) and went inside our private room (with many fans, thank heavens once again) to wait.  We ordered shrimp, pork, morning glory and rice.  They don’t peel the small shrimp, but take little bites as they eat the soft shell and all – including the little feet.  I tried to eat it whole but couldn’t quite get it down.  John peeled his but it was difficult and even he gave up after a few tries.  The pork was pretty good and the morning glory was wonderful as usual.  Our meal here was under 100,000 VND (about $5).From there we walked to Com Vietnam which was back by the post office. Our meal here was under 100,000 VND (about $5).

Texas BBQ - 22H Minh Khai Haiphong, Vietnam
All expats in the city know Texas BBQ.  They have two locations, we visited the one on Minh Khai. I highly recommend the pizza, burgers and BBQ.  Not so much the fish and chips and Tex Mex food.
